Once upon a time, there were three little girls who went to the police academy... If you're over 50, you may remember that iconic line from Charlie's Angels, the classic TV series starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett (for a time), and Jaclyn Smith. While the series ran from 1976 to 1981, this 1977 Mustang II Ghia is reportedly linked to Jaclyn Smith’s character, Kelly Garrett, from the show, as the car she drove during the series.
Ford's Mustang II Ghia model, built in November 1976 at the company's Dearborn, Michigan factory, was introduced with styling influenced by the Italian coachbuilder Ghia, which had recently been acquired by Ford. The Ghia trim package aimed to provide a more luxurious, personal luxury vehicle feel, featuring formal rooflines, plush interiors, and exterior accents.
The 1977 Ghia Mustang included an available "Sports Appearance Group" which came with color-matching to either black or tan. This particular Mustang is finished in Tan (code 8H), with a black half-vinyl roof (code NA). The paint and trim are in very good condition, and the bodywork is straight and solid. The car also features Endura bumpers that fit tightly to the body, as well as a trunk-mounted luggage rack.
This Mustang II is powered by a 302 CID V-8 (VIN code F), paired with a C-4 three-speed automatic transmission (code W) and a 3.00:1 rear end (code 6). The car is equipped with driver conveniences like air-conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. The car rolls on blackwall radial tires mounted on body-colored lace-pattern alloy wheels, which are in very good condition.
Inside, the car features a Chamois interior (code LT) with black trim. The front bucket seats and rear bench are in satisfactory condition, and the interior also features a matching carpet, inner door panels, and a dashboard with a brushed aluminum backsplash for the gauges. The steering wheel is a black, three-spoke design. A console-mounted shift lever and a factory AM/FM radio, along with an aftermarket RCA 8-track player, complete the interior. However, the A/C compressor engages, but the blower fan is currently inoperable.
Documentation includes the original owner's manual, a binder of assorted documents, the original buyer's order, an invoice, and an RCA guide for the 8-track player.
Whether or not this was the exact car used on Charlie's Angels, it remains a fantastic example of the classic 1977 Mustang II Ghia. This car is an interesting piece of automotive history and would make a great addition to any collection.
